Those of us who love to get moving outdoors, safety is of the utmost importance when heading outside in the cold weather. If you’re venturing into the elements, whether that be into cold, windy, icy or snowy conditions, you need to be prepared before leaving your house.

Here are seven tips to guarantee a safe outdoor workout.

Tip #1: Remember to bring your phone.

Most of us probably have our phones with us when we work out because we like listening to music or podcasts. It’s a great tool to help keep us energized during our workouts and also helps pass the time. Did you know that it is also important to have a phone for safety? If an injury occurs, a phone can be used to call for help. Always keep it handy.

Tip #2: Stay hydrated.

Before you leave your house, grab something to drink, preferably water, to stay hydrated. Drink before, during and after your workout. It’s recommended to drink one full bottle of fluid per hour or exercise.

Tip #3: Wear bright colors.

When choosing your outfit for exercising, keep in mind that bright colors are best. These can be easily seen by other people and drivers. If you’re going out when it’s dark outside, wear some type of reflective gear or clothing to be seen by drivers.

Tip #4: Protect your hands, feet and head.

Make sure to protect your extremities from the cold weather elements. Wear hats, gloves and socks. The best garments to select are ones made from wool, silk, polyester, Thinsulate, Polypropylene and Thermax.

Tip #5: Try adding layers.

When exercising outdoors, I recommend wearing a base layer that is in direct contact with your skin to help you stay warm and dry. In addition to this layer, add several layers of lightweight clothing to keep your body temperature regulated.

Tip #6: Select your footwear with care.

You should wear shoes that are considered anti-slip. These shoes provide proper friction to prevent slips and falls. This type of shoe can also provide you better balance.

Tip #7: Use your sunscreen.

UV rays are still very strong in the winter and can cause skin damage. Wear sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30 to block 97% of the sun’s UV rays.
