Philosophy Of Care

I am a physician trained in surgery and palliative care medicine, but my true profession as I see it, is to be a translator. I want to help patients understand what is happening to their bodies and to help them make sense of their treatments, their symptoms and most importantly, help guide them and their loved ones in making decisions about their care. Our medical technology is so advanced that sometimes it can feel like we are focused on a cell or an organ but lose sight of the whole person those parts make up. In palliative care my job is to embrace the person who we are treating and find out about what is most important for them as an individual. As our treatments have gotten more advanced, unfortunately some of the symptoms experienced by sufferers of disease have too. Our mission in palliative care to is to use all the tools we have to target the symptoms of the disease, not just the disease itself. We believe that relief of suffering should be our highest priority. My conviction is that patients deserve care and attention to these things, not only in the beginning of their disease process, but all throughout, and even in the final stages of life.
