Pediatric special procedures

Edward-Elmhurst Health offers a variety of specialized pediatric services, including outpatient and diagnostic testing, pediatric cancer and hematology outpatient services, infusion therapy and more. We also provide specialized medical care for children who have experienced sexual abuse in our Care Center. 

Pediatric Special Procedure Area (PSPA)

Located adjacent to the Inpatient Pediatrics/Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Edward Hospital, the five-bed Pediatric Special Procedure Area (PSPA) provides comprehensive outpatient services for children, including diagnostic testing for imaging procedures requiring sedation, infusion therapy, administration of blood and chemotherapy, endocrine testing and other complex procedures. 

When a test or procedure is scheduled, a nurse will call in advance with information about the test, including how to prepare your child, what time to arrive and where, and answer any questions you may have.

Pediatric special procedures

The following are some of the special tests and procedures we provide for children:

Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) Stimulation Test

This test can help determine whether the adrenal and pituitary glands are functioning normally. It can be used to help diagnose adrenal insufficiency, Addison's disease or other conditions. Get instructions for this test.

Clonidine Stimulation Test

This test can help determine how much growth hormone the body is making. It can be used to help diagnose growth hormone deficiency and figure out why a child is small or growing slowly. Get instructions for this test.

CT Scan

This test can be used to evaluate, diagnose and monitor a wide range of conditions, including infectious or inflammatory disorders, pain, cancer, neurological disorders, injury, trauma and more. Get instructions for this test.

Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT)

This test can help determine whether the body has difficulty regulating sugar levels. It can be used to help diagnose diabetes and insulin resistance. Get instructions for this test.

Insulin Stimulation

This test can help determine if the body is producing enough cortisol, a vital hormone that helps the body respond to stress and illness. It can be used to help diagnose a problem with the pituitary gland or the adrenal glands. Get instructions for this test.

Luteinizing Hormone Releasing Hormone Diagnosis (LHRH)

This test can help determine if your child is in early puberty or if there is a delay in sexual development. It can also be used to check for damage or disease of the testes or ovaries, pituitary gland, or hypothalamus. Get instructions for this test.

Luteinizing Hormone Releasing Hormone Suppression (LHRH)

This test can help determine if the pituitary gland is functioning normally and monitor the effectiveness of LHRH therapy. Get instructions for this test.

MRI

This test can help detect and diagnose a variety of conditions, including infections, inflammatory conditions, nervous system diseases, and problems with the eyes, ears, heart, blood vessels and circulatory system. It may provide clearer images of the inside of the body than an X-ray, CT scan or ultrasound. Get instructions for this test.

Voiding Cystogram (VCUG) With Oral Sedation

This test can help evaluate problems or abnormalities with the flow of urine through the urinary tract. It can be used to diagnose and treat urinary tract conditions, and is often used after a urinary tract infection to check for a condition known as vesicoureteral (VU) reflux.
